I think total mechanical energy of a system entails the summation of the system's potential energy and kinetic energy in association to the system's position and motion. For instance a moving car posses mechanical energy due to its motion and it will have kinetic energy whereas a an object lifted high above the ground has potential energy due to its position and it will have potential energy.
