From 1838 to 1880, the settlement geography of Natal is recounted in this conclusion. Vasco da Gama, a Portuguese navigator, discovered and named Natal on Christmas Day, 1497. However, neither the Portuguese nor subsequent members of the Dutch East India Company (1689) attempted to create a permanent settlement on South Africa's east coast. Natal was not permanently colonized by English (British) and Afrikaans (Voortrekker) speaking peoples until the early half of the nineteenth century. An Afrikaner is a linguistic term that refers to everyone who speaks Afrikaans, including vrijburghers, trekboers, and Khoikhoi. I refer to those servants as vrijburghers (free citizens).
