The conch is still a symbol of law and authority for the lads. Their unwavering faith in this sign is what distinguishes them from the lawless savages of Castle Rock. Sam recognizes that when Jack has paint on his face, the Jack they knew at school is gone and a cruel, savage replaces him. Jack is a ruthless individual. Jack has scared me with his facepaint. The conch is traditionally used as a sign of authority. Until it cracks and ceases to exist, it is characterized as white and magical.
