As a sociology student, I will disagree with my friend's statement by applying the concept of conflict theory that states that society has inequality in the distribution of its resources that make rich to be richer and poor to be poorer. Therefore the social and economic setup of the society will stagnant poor people to rise above the ladder by the formation of policies that favor rich people to be on top forever. For example in a society where the leadership is hereditary, only people born in that lineage are the advantage of becoming leaders and if your family is poor and doesn't have any blood relationship with the prominent family, the chances that the family will remain poor are high regardless of how hard they work they can not get to the top
