Consider the process of cloud formation.

  • A lot of humid air rises.
  • Rising air will cool (adiabatic expansion as air rises relatively quickly)
  • The air will cool so much that condensation of water vapor begins.
  • Lower air promotes vertical cloud development.

1.In order for water vapor to condense, leading to cloud formation, some excess water vapor is required in excess of saturation. Such an excess may appear either due to an increase in the moisture content of the air, or due to a decrease in its temperature below the dew point. The increase in air moisture occurs due to evaporation from the underlying surface. The air temperature decreases either as a result of its contact with a cold underlying surface and radiation, or as the air rises, expands, and adiabatically cools.

2.The change in internal energy occurs only due to the work of external forces. Or the work performed by the system occurs due to a decrease in internal energy.
