Question #117637

Explain why the pressure in the ocean increases with depth. What is the approximate
internal pressure in animals that live at a depth of 1000 m below sea level ?

Expert's answer

This is due to an increase in hydro-static pressure, the force per unit area exerted by a liquid on an object. The deeper you go under the sea, the greater the pressure of the water pushing down on you. For every 33 feet (10.06 meters) you go down, the pressure increases by one atmosphere.

P=Po+hρgP=1.01×105+1000×103×10=1.01×105+100×105P=P_o+h\rho g\\P=1.01\times10^5+1000\times10^3\times10=1.01\times10^5+100\times10^5

P=101.01×105PaP=101.01\times10^5Pa
