Answer to Question #179470 in Classical Mechanics for Kat

Question #179470

A ball moving at 1 m.s-1 strikes another ball twice the mass which is initially at rest.

mv=mv+2mu,m\vec{v}=m\vec{v'}+2m\vec{u},

mv=mvcos30°+2mu,mv=-mv'cos30°+2mu,

u=v+vcos30°2=1+0.50.872=0.72 ms.u=\frac{v+v'cos30°}{2}=\frac{1+0.5\cdot 0.87}{2}=0.72~\frac ms.
