He spends three times the number of days in New Zealand than he does in Australia and five days longer in India than in Australia. Let x be the number of days in Australia, then x+5 is the number of days in India and 3x is the number of days in New Zealand.

Therefore, we get the equation

x+(x+5)+3x=40

5x+5=40

5x=35

x=7

He spent 7 days in Australia
