Management is both an art and a science. Management involves both scientific and artistic elements. It's considered a science because it's made up of a methodical body of knowledge that includes universal truths. Management is considered an art since it demands specific skills that are only available to managers. The acquisition of knowledge is the focus of science, whereas the application of that knowledge and talent is the focus of art. A manager must learn science and the ability to apply it in order to be successful in his work. As a result, management is a delicate blend of science and art, as it demonstrates ideas while putting them into practice is a work of art. Science instructs on how to "know," whereas art instructs on how to "do." For example, a great singer must have a deep awareness of different ragas and be able to apply his particular gift to the art of singing. Similarly, knowing the concepts isn't enough for a manager; he must also apply them to a variety of administrative challenges, which is why science and art complement each other rather than being mutually contradictory.
