Discuss the pros and cons of e-government in the context of your own country(make sure to mention the country you come from), as well as the opportunities and limitations/challenges. Link your answer to good governance principles.
E-government is the application of information and communication technologies to government functions and procedures with the purpose of increasing efficiency, transparency and citizen participation. My country India has adopted the e-government concept to some extent.
Pros of e-government include: support and simplification of governance for the government, businesses and citizens, making the government administration more transparent and accountable, addressing society's needs and expectations through efficient public services and effective interaction between people, businesses and government, reducing corruption in the government, reducing corruption in the government, ensuring speedy administration of services and information, reducing difficulties for business and enabling digital communication by e-business.
Despite its offers of efficiency, transparency and convenience, e-governance has its cons. Cons of e-government in India include: significant loss of human interaction due to more mechanized systems, enabling rise of the risk of personal data theft and leakage, results to a lax administration as service providers can provide excuses for not providing services on technical grounds.
Opportunities for e-government include: full provision of government services through mobile phones and tablets- some services such as online payment of utility bills and digital documents are already in place but there is a large area of improvement for the m-app store, optimization of Government to Businesses (G2B) and Government to Employees (G2E) platforms- the area is not efficient as it stands currently and the opportunity to build on global information infrastructure.
Limitations of the e-government platform in India include: lack of computer literacy as a vast majority of citizens lack computer literacy, lack of access to the Internet in some parts of the country, lack of interconnectivity of government departments resulting in confusion and lack of information about e-governance among the masses.
