Chapters 5-6
Irony: List one example of each type of irony – verbal, situational, and dramatic in Chapters 5 and 6.
1. There is irony in the phrase "sign from the world of grownups" is that the sign is, indeed, a grownup. At least a dead one. This is an example of verbal irony.
2. Also there is irony takes place in Chapter 5 when the boys are discussing about the identity of the beast. It is ironic that we the readers know that there is no beast and that it is just a dead parachutist, but the boys are convinced that this "beast" is real and out for blood.
3. A good example of situational irony is when Jack didn't care about a rescue fire, which is all that Ralph ever wanted, but Jack set fire to the island, which turned out to be the rescue fire that saved them.
