Education During a Pandemic

Education, in essence, is passing on knowledge or skills in a variety of methods and mediums. These methods and media became a particularly pressing issue in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, owing to consequent disease prevention and control measures such as social distancing.

Traditional and mainstream education methods and media have usually involved physical interaction between teachers and learners and among learners. Education is not only an integral part of most societies, it is a human right. This translates into hundreds of thousands, into the millions of physical interactions among various demograpics, a highly problematic figure in the midst of a pandemic.

It then follows that alternative education methods and media have been a priority in ensuring that learning continues in the evolving education system. Particularly, online learning has become a vital tool for this. Online learning does not require physical interaction because knowledge and skills are passed virtually. This has created leeway for more educational, entrepreneurial, and employment opportunities strictly available on the internet.

Unfortunately, the solution presented by online learning branches into other intersectional, social, economic, and political problems. The pandemic has been very revealing of the social inequities and inadequacies that tend to become a background noise when one is not directly affected by them. For instance, debate has been sparked over the right to internet for all because a large number of people do not have access to a fast and affordable internet connection. This is despite the massive transfer of social and economic activities, such as education, from the physical world to the cyberspace, where access is determined by internet availability. Such issues create opportunity for innovation and investment.
