The environmental challenges observed in the "beautiful place" are deforestation, pollution, and garbage disposal/management, all of which contribute to the development of the Thneeds. Air pollution was caused by constant haze from factories during manufacturing. Water pollution was caused by waste materials. Trees were felled to harvest the tufts, and there was a lack of food and shelter for the barbaloots, as well as soil deterioration. Garbage, as well as industrial waste, was thrown everywhere by the family, polluting the water. Products such as bottled water, automobiles, and cell phones were among the thneeds. Barbaloots' habitats were destroyed when trees were cut down, and food resources were depleted. Swamee swans have been harmed to the point where the area in which they fly has become so polluted that the haze in the air has poisoned their lungs.
