The decaying infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, and relatively poor educational performance in South Africa's education system are perpetuating inequality and failing too many of the country's youngsters. The education system continues to be plagued by extreme inequities and persistent underperformance that have deep origins in apartheid's legacy, but which the current government is unable to address effectively.
South Africa is a multilingual society with certain specific linguistic issues as a result of its apartheid policies. On one hand, tensions exist between the country's two official languages, Afrikaans and English. On a different level, linguistic difficulties exist between ethnic Europeans and the African majority, most notably in school language training.
