The readings and videos in this unit introduce information on the history of various global educational systems and discuss some of the social and political forces that shaped them. For the discussion:
The national education system is the public structure comprising of state or state-recognized agencies accountable for providing for the educational needs of all the citizens of a particular state, such as Kenya. Therefore education system can be defined as the structure for effective teaching through which the education needs of all the citizens of a particular state are provided for. Social and political forces for example play a very important role in shaping the educational system of Kenya as a country. Some of the social forces that shape the educational system of Kenya are; customs, beliefs, and language. The duties or customs gave to each citizen in Kenya greatly influence the development of its educational system.
Also, the dogmas which the citizens of Kenya believe in a greater impact on how their educational system is shaped. For example, if the citizens believe that their educational system can bring change and revolution into their country that definitely shows that many citizens in Kenya have stabilized their lives through such a form of the education system.
Language is another social factor that shapes the educational system of Kenya as a country. The language which is used to teach in all educational institutions has implications on the cost of education and national unity of that country. Kenya for example where the English language is used as a teaching language in secondary schools and tertiary institutions has made the cost of education to be a bit cheaper and it has also promoted national unity.
On the other hand, political forces that shape the educational system of Kenya include the political parties in power and democratic commands. Political parties in power mostly influence the allocation of educational resources. For example, in Kenya NARC implemented the provision of free primary education. Democratic commands are another political force that shapes the education system of Kenya whereby it allows fair allocation of educational resources in all educational institutions.
