‘Reading stimulates the imagination of young readers.’
In an essay of no more than 800 words, discuss why the imagination is so important to a young
person’s development and what strategies authors can use to stimulate the imagination of
young readers.
Give specific examples from two children’s books you have read to substantiate your points.
Imagination is the action of forming new ideas, images or concepts of external objects not present to the senses or never before wholly perceived in reality. It fosters cognitive and social development.
The ability to imagine things pervades our entire existence. It influences everything people do, think about and create. It leads to elaborate theories, dreams and inventions in any profession. Imagination is important to young person’s development as it develop social skills, build self-confidence, practice language skills and work out fears. The following strategies can stimulate the imagination of young readers;
Ø Help them activate their imagination. Show them how valuable their imagination is
Ø Ask thoughtful questions,
Ø Make time for imaginative thinking and play,
Ø Encourage different experiences and finally
Ø Show playful side and imagination.
