You want your learners to act out the scene depicted in the extract above in the classroom.
In your own words, describe the key features of drama and how focusing on them will assist the learners to plan their plays. (25 marks)
Key features of drama include:
Thematic idea- this is the thought behind the drama; it drives the thought and structure of the drama.
Plot- it's the action that drives the drama forward to the conflict and eventually, to the resolution. It includes the crisis, rising action and falling action that characters experience in the drama.
Characters- these are people who experience the plot. They portray distinct and identifiable individuals with personal personal, social and ethnic characteristics.
Language- it's critical to the drama's dialogue as it's what renders the drama understandable to the audience. It defines the characters, gives exposition and drives the action.
Music- this feature incorporates music with the Aristotelian idea of spectacle of drama. It's not a compulsory element but is necessary as it contributes to the spectacle (costumes, settings, effects) and anything that makes the drama a visual and auditory spectacle.
Focusing on these drama features will help the learners to more easily learn their plays by providing the necessary context for the dramatic work. These features set the mood, tone, intensity of the action and the nature of the story. These features will also assist the learners to engage their audience more on an emotional override.
