A solid cylinder is to be 0.25 m in diameter. The base of axial length 25 mm is to be of metal which has a specific gravity of 7, and the remainder of material which has a specific gravity of 0.5. Find the maximum overall length of the cylinder so that it may float in water in stable equilibrium with its axis vertical.

State the product design specification considering output shaft design factor as 1. Performance.

Consider a typical major airport in Asia and a typical major airport in the United States, serving some 30 million passengers per year – e.g., Tokyo Narita and Philadelphia. [Note: You need not know anything specific to these two airports – this is a question about “generic” airports.] Please describe in qualitative terms how these two airports will probably differ with respect to some set of airside characteristics. A list of characteristics you may wish to refer to would include, at a minimum (feel free to add some others): (a) Airport airside capacity, i.e., the number of aircraft movements that can be served per hour at the airport. (b) Aircraft mix. (c) Sensitivity of runway capacity and of air traffic delays to weather conditions. (d) Use of limits on the number of movements (“slots”) that can be scheduled per hour at the airport

Calculate the gears for cutting metric threads of following

pitch. i) 4mm pitch, ii) 5.25 mm pitch. The lead screw of lathe

contains 6 TPI. The lathe is supplied with 20 to 120 teeth in step

of 5and an additional gear wheel of having 127 teeth.

Determine the minimum diameter to maintain stable conditions for a warming bouy. The centre of gravity is 750 mm above the base. It has a height of 2,75 m and a relative density of 0,55. It should float with its longitudinal axis in the vertical plane in seawater with a density of 1025kg/m^3.

A barge with an elliptical waterline has vertical sides. The barge has a length and width of 225m and 19,5 m respectively. It has a draught of 12,5 m in a fresh water canal. The centre of gravity is 10,5 below the deck and the side have a height of 18m. It then sails out to sea.,with a water density of 1028 kg/m^3. A sudden storm causes two 27-ton containers to move 14m across the deck of the barge. Determine the angle of tilt caused by this.

A 1 m^3 opening in a water reservoir is sealed with a plate having sides of 1 m. The plate hinges around its topside, which is 4m vertically below the surface. The plate is at an angle of 60 degrees to the surface. The plate is opened with a chain, which is attached to the centre of the bottom side and at an angle of 45 degrees to the plate. The plate has a mass of 180 kg. Calculate the force required in the chain to open the plate.

Water flow from a reservoir to a pipe system is controlled by a butterfly valve. It consists of a 400mm diameter disc controlled by a horizontal shaft attached to the middle of the disc. When closed it is perpendicular to the pipe which slopes at 20 degrees to the horizontal. Determine the torque required on the shaft to keep the disc closed when the water the water level is 1m above the shaft.

A service hatch in a drink water is positioned 1 m below the surface. The hatch dimensions are 700mm(w) x 800mm(h). The oke vertical side has two hinges, one at the top and one at the bottom. One fastening bolt is situated on the opposite sode 400mm from the top. Find the force in each of the hinges and the bolt.

HINT: First find the resultant force and where it acts, then use moments to find the various forces.
