There are many individuals who view punishment (both positive and negative) as a necessary teaching method. This can vary from one culture to another as well as from one individual to the next. What are your views on using punishment in order to reduce unwanted behaviors? In what situations is it OK, and in what situations should it be discouraged? Provide examples and references, if appropriate.

Part II - What is the role of operant conditioning in our development of reading skills? How do these skills become stronger and more “automatic”? Do you think that many of our “skills” follow the same path of development, and why?

Discuss the vygostky theory on learning

Based on trait theories (i.e., personality characteristics that can be measured along a scale or continuum, with people ranging from low to high on each characteristic).

  • Which model—PEN, OCEAN, or HEXACO—do you think provides the better overview of the fundamental traits that are of interest when examining personality? Why?

  • Do you think that traits such as these are better characterized in terms of dichotomies (e.g., you are either an introvert or you are an extravert, like on the MBTI) or along a continuum (e.g., you can be lower or higher in extraversion, like with the PEN, OCEAN, and HEXACO models)? In other words, do you have a preference for “type theories” or “trait theories”?
  • Are there are any major personality traits that seem to be ignored by all of these models, or have these theorists covered the most important ones, in your view?

During your shift at the clinic, a young man arrives with a red, scaly rash formed into rings. What is this patient’s diagnosis likely to be? What causes this condition? How can he avoid this rash in the future?

Part I - The most commonly known and labeled senses are sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. Considering this, please address the following

Do you think that there may be senses which do not necessarily receive information only from the environment, but rather from within us as well? (For example, how do you sense that you are hungry? How do you sense the need for belonging?)

If you think that we may have more senses than the 5 noted above, would you provide your opinion on why you think the dominant scientific community may not have considered more than the typical 5 senses? If you wish, you may use other references to strengthen or support your discussion.

How does a “definition” (for example, how we define the 5 senses) help or hinder us in knowing the parameters of a concept, think about a concept’s potential for expansion, or keep a concept within known boundaries?

Do you think that the definition of sensation needs to be expanded? Why?

Assignment 3: Worst NBA Player

One element of the self is the capacity to judge how good one is relative to others. Yet sometimes we misjudge how good we really are. Give the following article a read and then let me know what you think. What is the explanation for why recreational athletes often challenge professional athletes? Why do we struggle to appreciate how good some people are at whatever relative to us? What is the “stupid gene” that professionals possess?

Deb, S. (2021, April 19th). Why the worst NBA player is (probably) still better than you. New York Times.
