Co-dependency is a learned behavior that can be passed down from one generation to another. It is also known as “relationship addiction” because people with codependency often form or maintain relationships that are one-sided, emotionally destructive and abusive. Co-dependency has the following negative impacts of parental SUDs on the family; disruption of attachment, rituals, roles, routines, communication, social life, and finances. Families in which there is a parental SUD are characterized by an environment of secrecy, loss, conflict, violence or abuse, emotional chaos, role reversal, and fear.

The following are some of the features of co-dependency member of a family; he or she has trouble articulating his or her emotions and feelings, he/she want to please everyone, he/she feel the need to fix others, he/she struggle to set clear boundaries in his/her life, and finally he/she is loyal to a fault.
