Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)is a synchronous data standard transmission on optical fibers. Therefore that means it is a standardized digital protocol of communication. It is one of the communication protocols that Bellcore develops. It is purposely used to transmit a huge amount of data over a relatively long distance through the optical fiber. Multiple streams of digital data are transferred at one particular time over the optical fiber with SONET. The elements include add/drop multiplexer, regenerator, STS demultiplexer, and STS multiplexer.
