Cultures vary by society; a culture represents a group's beliefs and practices, while society represents the people who share those values and behaviors. The goods or belongings of a group of people, such as autos, stores, and the physical structures where people worship, are referred to as material culture. Nonmaterial culture, on the other hand, is made up of a society's ideas, attitudes, and beliefs. The term "culture" was linked with "civilization" in 18th and 19th century Europe, and it was regarded a distinctive element of Western society. The concept of "high culture" bears a resemblance to that colonial notion of culture.Culture became linked with nationalism throughout the Romantic Era, giving rise to the concept of multiple national cultures. Culture is now defined by social scientists as a society's rules, values, and beliefs, as well as its objects and symbols, and the meaning ascribed to those items and symbols.
