(a) Stable equilibrium is a type of equilibrium that occurs when a body is slightly displaced and goes back to its original position after the force is withdrawn. An example of stable equilibrium is when a cone is balanced on its base such that it goes back to its original position after a slight displacement.
(b) Unstable equilibrium is a type of equilibrium that occurs when a slightly displaced body does not return to its original position when the force is withdrawn. An example of stable equilibrium is that of a cone balanced on its tip. The cone, in this case, does not go back to its original position after a slight displacement.
