The Shell Model assumes that each nucleon of the nucleus can be considered as a particle in a field created by all other nucleons of this nucleus. This field has a certain potential, and the behavior of a nucleon is described using psi functions, which are solutions to the Schrödinger equation, which is compiled in the usual way for quantum mechanics.
