Firstly, assume we want to measure the total length of a football pitch.

We add all the sides together to get the length. This total length is called perimeter.

Using the same concept, we can measure the perimeter of a fence that is rectangular or square in shape.

In order to save the stress of moving down to measure each side of the fence or pitch in question. We find the addition of the side of two sides (length and width). Then, multiply the result by 2. This give same result as measuring and adding the sides.
