language of Mathematics. How would you, as the teacher, clarify the meaning of fraction
as “part of a whole where the whole is a single object” to a grade 4 learner? Use two
different representations to illustrate your answer.
A fraction means a part, so a fraction is the part of a whole object.
example : we have a sausage and Mary eats half of it so it remains half therefore we say :
Half of a sausage
Example 2: one third of a mango meaning part of the mango is absent.
