Business Management as a science.
According to John F. Mee, Management is the art of securing maximum results with a minimum effort so as to secure maximum success and happiness for both employer and employee and give the public the best possible service. It can also be referred to as the art of organizing and coordinating business activities in line with the organizational goals. A business is an activity that is done with an aim of making profit for the benefit of the owners. Managers are a key pillar in management as they are the ones tasked with day to day operation of a the business. Below we focus on key aspects that qualify business management as a science as explained by Erasmus et al. Business management can be categorized as a form of social science due to various reasons as deliberated below:
Experimentation and observation
Scientific principles are built out of thorough scientific research i.e. they are factual and can tested and proven E.g. the argument that employees are resistant to change can be proven.Business Management principles encapsulate scientific research & observation too which are combined with theoretical part which builds a very reliable foundation of business management. (Pritchard, 2006).Managers overtime have continued to play a very crucial role in developing this knowledge which is indeed been of greater value to management fraternity.
Universally accepted principles
A scientific principle must be applicable in different situation and in different environments. (Tracy, 2014)It is evident also that management contains some principles which adopt a universal application which brings out the scientific aspect eg; delegation which is applied in all organizations and in different environment as well.
Cause & Effect Relationship
A scientific principle points out the cause and relationship between various variables. Business management reflects the same in that it seeks to also establish cause and relationship. Eg, good remuneration leads to increased employee performance which in turn improves output, a working environment affects the employee output.
In conclusion, business management is a science since it upholds significant number of scientific principles. However, it is still a field which is still developing as more management concepts continue to be brought forward.
