This essay focuses on trade unionism in Fiji, which was established in the line with the colonial government agreements. However, after independence in 1970, a debate on whether the trade union movement was an "agent of state control" or an equal social partner in the affairs of industry and the nation was brought up. As a result, between 1983 and 1984, the Fiji Trade Union Congress, the Fiji Labour Party was formed, which was supported by the government. Since then, trade union in Fiji has been facing opposition. The military coups in the country has jeopardized the success of Fiji trade unions as individuals continue to strongly condemn the latest round of threats and intimidation that emanates from the nation's military regime.
