Children construct their own knowledge in response to their experiences. In stage one, the sensorimotor stage infants get to learn their surroundings by manipulating objects and by their sensory experiences. The learning is mainly through basic actions such as sucking, crawling, listening, and crying. Unlike in the fourth stage the formal operational stage whereby the young adult can critically think about morals, responsibilities and can derive things from a general principle to a piece of specific information.
Children are intrinsically motivated to learn and do not require rewards from adults to motivate them. In the four stages of Piaget's cognitive development theory, we see infants trying to learn on their own, for example, in the second stage we see the children begin to think and learn to use words and pictures representing objects. And also in the third stage, the children get to think about the logic for example you need one kilo of salt to balance one kilo of cotton. All these have happened without any intervention of an adult giving any motivation.
