Labour force is defined as the total number of both the employed and the unemployed in a country. It is the total effort that the people contribute to the production of goods and services.

On the other hand, a trade union deals with a group of the employed whereby they come together to maintain and improve their conditions of employment.

According to the labor markets before and during the covid 19 periods,

  1. Employment rates and labor force participation rates in the UK are well above pre-recession levels but it is not the same case in the US
  2. The rate of self-employment in the UK rose after 2007 but fell in the US.

Despite the differences, there has also been a trend of similarities in both markets. some of them include the following.

  1. The wage growth in both labor markets has weakened.
  2. By the end of 2019, the number of the unemployed was below pre-recession levels while underemployment was not.
  3. In both markets, there has been a little change in second job holding rates.

According to recent research, there is only one trade union in the UK by the name TUC unlike in the US where there are a number of trade unions. A large number is organized under two organizations American Federation of Labour, and the congress of industrial organization, and the Change to Win Federation.

In both cases, there are a few similarities and differences which include the following.

  1. They both represent workers of the same educational level
  2. Union members hail from a variety of sectors
  3. They strengthen democracy by giving workers a voice in policy debates.

The only major difference between the unions in both states is that UK has only one union whereas the US has several unions which are under two organizations.
