Discuss the history and development of the concepts flourishing and languishing and what they encompass
Definitions
Flourishing can be defined as to when people have positive social functioning, positive emotions and positive psychological functioning at all times while leading a quality way of life (Knoesen et al, 2018). Flourishing measures positive mental health and well-being and includes various concepts and components such as resilience, generativity, growth, well-being and goodness. Languishing can be described as the opposite of flourishing and includes symptoms such as numbness, burnout and lack of motivation. Languishing can be helped by therapy and other techniques for coping as it is not a mental condition. Â
History
Sociologist’s Corey Keyes, Barbra Fredrickson and others argued and presented for a condition that they referred to as a complete state of mental health whereby they argued that mental health is not the lack of mental illness nor having high levels of well-being. They introduced the concept of flourishing. These sociologists argued that adults with complete state of mental health were flourishing while adults without such a condition were languishing.
