Psychographic information focuses on psychological variables such as motives, beliefs, and priorities, whereas demographic information focuses on exterior or physical factors such as age, race, gender, geography, and so on.

Psychographic segmentation's most distinguishing feature is its implicit recognition that individuals differ, and that they are frequently motivated by drastically diverse values, personalities, lifestyles, and/or views. On the other hand, demographic segmentation tends to focus on somewhat general data points (e.g., age, location, employment, etc.) that might be more important in different regions. Demographic data might provide you the jumpstart you need to create a "rough sketch" of the population you're attempting to target. Due to the extensive availability of public data such as U.S. Census Bureau figures, demographic information has generally been easier to get than psychographic information.
