An individual can use problem solving approach to resolve a conflict as follows;

1) Identify the issues- when using problem solving approach, there should be clarity on what the problem is, therefore the problem solver has remember that different people might have different views of what the problem issues are.

2) Understand everyone's interests

Interest is a situation where an individual wants his/her needs to be satisfied by any given solution. It is possible to ignore true interest when attached to one particular solution. Therefore, the best solution is listening with intentions to understand and satisfying everyone's interests in a given workplace.

3) Listing down the possible solutions- this is the time to brainstorm and allow in the room for creativity to think of all possible solutions that are favourable to everyone.

4) Evaluate the options- go through and eliminate the less desirable or unreasonable solutions. Consider the solutions in order of preference. Evaluate the solutions in terms of their advantages and disadvantages.

5) Decide on a solution- when deciding on a solution, specify on who will take action, how the solution will be implemented and the time it will be implemented.

6) Evaluate the outcome- evaluate how effective the solution was and decide whether the existing plans need to be revised, or whether a new plan is needed to better address the problem. Therefore, if the outcome of the solution is not pleasing, new plans should be made and selected, or the existing solutions should be revised.
