The points included Wilson's ideas about how nations conduct foreign policy, such as freedom of the seas and free trade, as well as the concept of national self-determination, which was realized through the collapse of European empires and the creation of new states.The evacuation of all Russian territory and a settlement of all questions affecting Russia that will ensure the best and most free cooperation of the other nations of the world in obtaining for her an unhindered and unembarrassed opportunity to determine her own political development and national policy, as well as assure her of a sincere welcome into the society of free nations under institutions of her choosing; and, more than a welcome, assistance. Imperialism plays a role in this. In the months ahead, how Russia is treated by her NATO allies will be a litmus test of their goodwill, understanding of her needs as opposed to their own, and intellectual and altruistic sympathy.
