The Black power movement was started in 1960. It was a social movement by Black activists and among other things it was focused on equality and power within the African American neighborhood's that had been sidelined. With power, the movement strived to ensure self - sufficiency and safety within the black community. This power was achieved through setting up services that were operated by Blacks. These included black owned food cooperatives, media, clinics, printing presses, schools, and ambulatory services. With equality the movement was mainly concerned with racial pride. The movement wanted the African American race to be respected and not to be viewed as inferior to other races. African Americans should not be restricted from accessing certain areas or receiving services because they are Black.
