A caregiver can encourage a toddler to be independent by avoiding holding their hand. This will help the toddler move around more freely. Also, self-feeding is another strategy that can be used by a caregiver to instill a sense of independence to the toddler. The two strategies will enable the toddler to learn to move around alone and at the same time, feed himself/herself, thus slowly attaining independence.
