Chris Mann attended Diocesan College (Bishops) in Rondebosch, Cape Town, after being born in Port Elizabeth in 1948. He worked at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, as a lecturer in the English Department from 1977 until 1980. He worked for an NGO called The Valley Trust in KwaNyuswa, outside of Durban, from 1980 to 1995, before returning to Rhodes University to teach poetry at the Institute for the Study of English in Africa.
