The National Telemedia Council, established in Madison, Wisconsin, and chaired by Marieli Rowe for more than 50 years, is the oldest organization dedicated to studying media literacy.
The NTC has published the Journal of Media Literacy, formerly known as "Telemedium."
Both print and electronic media can be decoded, evaluated, analyzed, and produced by someone who is media literate. Media education, which emphasizes hands-on experiences with media production as opposed to teaching with media, and media studies, which emphasizes teaching about media as opposed to teaching with media, are two closely linked conceptions.
