Antigone Scene Analysis
Directions: For each day of reading, please complete the following analysis of scenes and odes in complete sentences.
Scene #/Name: Scene 3
1) The Soldier brings Antigone, who buried the body, to Creon, who condemns her to death. Creon and Antigone debate the merits of their positions. Ismene joins them and tries to take Antigone’s side, but Antigone refuses to share her fate or her glory. In this ode, Sophocles introduces the theme of romantic love a concept new to the Oedipus Trilogy. Reflecting on the conversation between Creon and Haemon, the chorus comes to the conclusion that love is the cause of their conflict.
2) The third scene of Sophocles' Antigone opens with Haimon assuring his father of his loyalty. ... He demeans his son - almost as harshly as he has demeaned Antigone and women in general - and says Antigone will die immediately. Haimon does not believe Creon and leaves, after telling his father he will never return.
3) The important quotes are "She'll never escape, she and her blood sister, the most barbaric death." "Go down below and love, if love you must- love the dead!" "Not ashamed for a moment, not to honor my brother, my own flesh and blood." "Let me die beside you, consecrating the dead together." Men, according to Creon, should be stronger than women, and Antigone has proven herself to be an anarchist, defying Creon's edict. When Haimon tries to reason with his father, citing the dissatisfaction of Creon's subjects, the king is furious.
