The article by Adrian F. Ward seeks to establish that humans are not inherently evil. Rather, the first human instinct is to do good. However, the answer is not straight as the author offers two polar perspectives. He notes, “ nature is something we must be born with, then we may be neither good nor bad, cooperative nor selfish.” This is somehow proven in Lord of the Flies with irony. In the movie, Jack is quoted saying, “We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages.” This is ironic as he, later on, turns out to be the so-called “savage.”
