Theme: The little boy with the mulberry-colored birthmark comes forward to speak of what? What element does he introduce? How does the descriptive phrase, “the small boy twisted further into himself” hint at a theme? What has Ralph come to learn about society on the island? The personal conflict between Ralph and Jack in Chapter 3 mirrors the thematic conflict of the novel. What is the thematic conflict?
Ralph imparts new concepts to the lads, such as the fact that only the person holding the conch shell is allowed to talk. All of the lads are terrified when the boy with the mulberry birthmark presents the concept of the "beastie" to them. Ralph proposes that they light a fire on the summit of the mountain to signal for help. Darkness is a beastie. Comes out at night, terrified but aware of its presence, represents the evil in all of us. Ralph notices that there is a lack of civility and order; after the meetings, everyone disperses and goes their separate ways.
