In the perspective of racial, ethnic, spiritual, geographic disparities, and other cultural indicators that depart from dominant, sometimes racist, "norms," multiculturalism refers to the presence of variation and unequal power relations across communities,( West, 2014). It is a viewpoint that opposes assimilation and the notion of the melting pot as an intrusion of the prevailing culture, preferring analogies like the salad bowl or the beautiful mosaic. Each cultural and ethnic aspect in the community retains its individuality.
