As well as being situated next to a busy road, Rabi Ridge Primary School is also situated alongside a taxi rank and a dumping side. The principal of the school, Mr Molapo, is so passionate about, and committed to, the safety of his learners that he wants to create an environment for them that is conducive to learning. The aforesaid taxi rank attracts many hawkers and beggars to the area, of whom most are young men. The issue is of great concern to the school personnel and parents involved, as it threatens the safety of the learners.
3.3 When preparing a lesson, the teachers should ensure that the contents of the lesson are relevant to the learners’ environment. In your own words, write down the points that you would use in teaching Foundation Phase learners about the following topics:
• safety when crossing the road (5)
• dealing with strangers (5)
• assessing the victim and the accident scene (7)
• creative ways of avoiding, or of reducing the amount of, trash (6)
1. Incorporate road safety rules such as; Understand Traffic Signals. …
Sensitivity issues
Before teaching road safety, check if any children have been bereaved by, hurt in, or witnessed a serious road crash, and be sensitive to their needs. Talk to them and their carers about whether they wish to be excluded from lessons or activities that discuss death or injury.
Getting everyone on board
You may need to persuade others within your school or college, particularly the head or board, about the importance of road safety before you start teaching and promoting it, and in order to organise or take part in a Road Safety Week.
when you crossing the road
-Teachers can not hold the
very child’s hand when they cros
s the road ,therefore educators need to teach
learners about the importance of safety when they cross the road .
- No running when they cross the road because they can fall and cause the accident that might see them
in hospital or lost their life .
-The wearing of bright colours when its dark or at night , so it will be easy for drivers to recognize the
pedestrian on the road .
- They should not listen to music while they are crossing the road by playing a loud music will make they
to not hear if the car is coming , headsets that they are using can block the ears .
- Some roads have traffic officer that control learners when they cross the road ,therefore learners need
to understand the signs that the officer is using as indication on when to stop and when to go .
3.Dealing with strangers
Most student walk alone when they are going to school because some of their parents have duties like
going to work , therefore learners need to be taught about the strangers . Parents can play a vital role in
teaching the learners or children about the strangers . Children have been taught by their parents to
respect the elders when they talk to them and listen when and elder person is talking to them
,therefore it is not easy for learners to recognize the strangers as this people can talk
nice to children in
order to attract or making sure that they listen to what they are saying .Children need to be taught or
mad aware of this an appropriate behavior with strangers particular in a situation when they walk alone
.As educator ,teaching the learners to not accept the gift or money from the people they do not know
.They should not take a ride or lift from the people they do not know unless it was their parents orders
to do so .Incase of changing the transport of child the parent need to inform the educator so that he/she
will be aware of the changes .Learners should be aware in places they walk alone and places that are
dangerous and they must not walk alone or pass that particular place .
3.Assessing the victim and the accident scene
Children should learn how to recognize that an emergence situation take exist ,such as learning an
unusual sound ,sight ,smell and the behaviors . All this can help the children to identify the emergence .
Teaching learners a good communication skills because this will help them when they are in an accident
scene . Incase of an accident or consciousness , they are two levels of consciousness that need to be
taught to learners which are Fainting and Coma.
4. Learners should be taught on how to keep environment clean.
Learners to know importance of cleaness and school should provide specific places to dump trash.
Ensure the environment the learners are occupying is clean to avoid exposure of learners to diseases such as cough typhoid and other diseases resulted from unclean environment.
