As well as being situated next to a busy road, Rabi Ridge Primary School is also situated alongside a taxi rank and a dumping side. The principal of the school, Mr Molapo, is so passionate about, and committed to, the safety of his learners that he wants to create an environment for them that is conducive to learning. The aforesaid taxi rank attracts many hawkers and beggars to the area, of whom most are young men. The issue is of great concern to the school personnel and parents involved, as it threatens the safety of the learners.
3.1 Identify at least three kinds of health risks posed by the school’s location. (6)
3.2 State what precautionary measures the learners should take when crossing the road. (6)
3.1 Health risks posed by school location include:
Risk of harm and injury. The large crowds including beggars, passengers and hawkers who mostly are men subject young female pupils to sexual related harm, that is, rape and defilement.
Risk of road traffic accidents. Pupils are exposed to pedestrian accidents along the busy road.
Risk of infection. Pupils can contract airborne diseases because of the large number of people. The dumping site can also cause contamination.
3.2 Precautions learners should take when crossing roads.
Learners should carefully observe the traffic control lights. They should cross on indication by green light.
Learners should only cross at the marked pedestrian crossing points.
Learners should observe both directions before crossing.
Learners should wait for an assistant to direct them if available.
Learners should keep a distance from the road while waiting at the pavement.
Learners should wait for the moving vehicles to stop or wait for a clear road before crossing.
