Cultural Paradigm Shift
Have you experienced a paradigm shift?
Look at the attached graphic of Morgan Freeman. He makes the statement, “Just because I disagree with you, does not mean I hate you. We need to relearn that in our society.” Do you agree or disagree? Why? (5)
Would you agree with the statement, “When we don’t understand each other’s language, language identity and culture we view each other differently”? In your elaboration discuss how your being exposed to different cultures, the cultural ceremony assignment, and the module AFL1501 expanded your world view. (10)
Which culture do you feel you have learnt something from and what did you learn? (5)
The cultural paradigm can be described as “one in which the phenomenon being considered is regarded as being the product uniquely of its cultural context.” The cultural paradigm began to gain influence in the social sciences during the 1980s. Accordingly, a paradigm shift is defined as "an important change that happens when the usual way of thinking about or doing something is replaced by a new and different way."
Many times, interacting with people from different cultures helps you view life from a different perspective. When you learn about different cultures, you establish new ways of thinking and approaching and solving problems. Culture is learned. While much of what we learn about a culture can be learned through school, family, peers, and the media, there are often many things about a culture that are learned subconsciously. For example, we may learn when particular holidays occur in school, like Christmas is always on December 25th. There are three basic ways in which culture is learned: observation, listening, asking questions. Observation is a very basic skill, but we are often lazy with what we observe, so we fail to notice important details. What are 2 examples of culture? Customs, laws, dress, architectural style, social standards, religious beliefs, and traditions are all examples of cultural elements.
Awareness of our own culture is important, because it can keep us from projecting our values onto others. For example, mainstream American culture respects direct eye contact. Those born and raised in this culture assume people who do not look us in the eye are dishonest, weak, and/or evasive.
It is important to love our culture because it shows our identity as Filipinos. Explanation: In the world stands many nations which hold different norms and culture. Many tourists and foreigners came to our country to witness and experience our culture so we must be proud of it and share it to them.
All cultures share these basic features.
