According to Piaget's theory of cognitive development, children in the foundation phase are mostly in the preoperational and concrete operational stages. This implies that a child in the preoperational stage cannot use logic or transform, combine or separate ideas. The child's development consists of building experiences about the world through adaptation and working towards the concrete stage when he or she can use logical thought.

In the concrete operational stage, the child is now mature enough to use logical thought or operations for example rules but can only apply logic to physical objects hence concrete operational stage.
