1.What would you say to those who believe Africa lacks expertise in responding to pandemics? (200 words) 5 Marks
I would disagree with people who believe that Africa lacks the necessary expertise in responding to pandemics. Africa is quite resourceful in terms of brains and knowledge. The education system in Africa is quite involving and we have qualified medical practitioners. The challenge is that the platform in which to do their research is not quite smooth. The resources such as funds support from the governments and African organizations like AU is not provided. In any case that an African organization or doctors come up with a vaccine or means to control the pandemic, our government doesn’t support them since they are controlled by the Western countries and they don’t trust African Medical practitioners. It is out of this mistrust that Africa finds itself slowly responding to the pandemics and not because of expertise.
African-trained doctors have been involved in the development of vaccines in other countries like the United Kingdom and America. In terms of management styles, Africa has expertise in the field to handle pandemics. It has specialists in that field, such as pandemic management, disaster management, and general management but they are reluctant when it comes to controlling the pandemic as they wait to see other continents how they respond to it. This shows a lack of self-esteem in us. Issues such as trust, self-esteem, overreliance on other continents, and lack of support are the reason for the poor response in pandemics but not on expertise.
