I disagree with the notation that a first reading must result in immediate understanding. This however varies depending on the person. Some people's mind process the information read slowly while others process very fast. Reading to understand entails various stages. The initial stage which is pre-reading involves developing a purpose for reading, previewing the text, scanning the vocabulary and activating the background knowledge. The second stage is the through reading. In this stage the reader looks for clues in the text to obtain the author's meaning. The reader also makes and reviews predictions. The last stage is post reading. It enables the reader to create summaries of the text and answer questions. This leads to understanding.
