Discuss the positive and negative consequences of urbanisation on development in African cities. Use examples to support your answer.
Urbanization in African cities has both advantages and disadvantages. The positive consequences include providing labor for companies localized in urban centres and ensuring that people can have access to social amenities such as electricity, clean, water, education, health services, and government services, that are mostly situated in towns. However, there are also negative consequences such as overcrowding, emergence of slums such as Soweto in South Africa that have poor housing and sanitation. Also urbanization increases pollution as most industries are situated in towns. Urbanization has also reduced food security as a result of rural urban migration leading to low agricultural labor input.
