1.4 One of the aims of new social patterns is the formation of citizens who are aware of their social responsibility. (See p 5 of SoE). Briefly discuss how this aim could be taught in the classroom. (3)
1.5 Identify the main ideas of functionalist theory in relation to schools in society. (5)
1.4. The aim can be taught in the classroom by activity-based learning in which students will learn through direct participation in related activities such as community programs and awareness campaigns. The school can organize specific programs such as cleaning programs, essential in keeping the community clean. The class sessions may include campaigns on road safety and climate change, improving their knowledge within the classroom level. Teachers can also educate students on social science lessons to educate them on the correct standards. This will allow students to share perspectives on public views on social issues, which will fulfill new social patterns.
1.5. Functionalists believe that education provides unity and togetherness and has a positive impact on society. They also believe that education prepares people for the work environment in later life and teaches important skills. According to functionalists, the role of schools is to prepare students for participation in the institutions of society. Schools socialize students to be a part of economic, political, and social institutions. They should shape individuals to fit into existing social practices.
